Jewish comedian cancels Lebanon shows following Hezbollah bullying

Moroccan-French comedian Gad Elmaleh has been forced to cancel his performances at the Lebanese Beiteddine festival following a fierce propaganda campaign against him driven by Hezbollah.

The photomontage above, which includes a picture of the artist, a photo of an Israeli soldier, and an image of Lebanon under attack, is how the Shiite TV channel al Manar portrayed Gad Elmaleh. The channel claimed that the photograph of the Israeli soldier, which does bear something of a resemblance, was that of the artist at hand, leading viewers to believe that the Moroccan-born French citizen at some point served in the IDF. The photograph, along with several others, had been originally published on a pro-Israel website some 12 years ago. FRANCE 24 contacted the website, which explained that as an organisation which supports ASBI-Keren soldiers, the photographs, each accompanied by a comment from a celebrity, were sold in order to raise funds for social work projects. The picture in question however, was certainly not that of Gad Elmaleh.

Despite being hugely popular in Lebanon (tickets for the shows sold like hot cakes and he was even solicited into performing an extra show), Elmaleh announced on Saturday that he would not be able to perform at July's Beiteddine festival "in light of various protests and calls for boycott". The announcement has raised concerns with some ministers and ire from the public. An online movement based on Facebook vows to fight what they call "the terrorism of culture" by Hezbollah.

“This story is catastrophic for Lebanon’s image”

Reina Sarkis is a Lebanese psychoanalyst and researcher living in France. She's part of the movement which is calling for resistance against Hezbollah.

I'm absolutely furious. It's through intellectual terrorism that Hezbollah has managed to get their way. They've taken the Lebanese people hostage, because people outside the country associate all of us with Hezbollah's ideas. [French publication] ‘Le Nouvel Observateur' published a post entitled ‘In Gad Elmaleh, Lebanon sees an Israeli soldier'. There's the proof. This story is catastrophic for Lebanon's image.

By over-politicising Lebanon, there's no space for hindsight or self-criticism. And it's possible to assume that a Jew must also be a Zionist and an Israeli soldier! You can't ban the right to laugh. What will go next? Woody Allen films and Freud books? We need to resist this; we can't let them censore us with ideas that only suit them. We're all victims in this case, just like Gad.

I've already counted myself in and signed up to the movement on Facebook that plans to project a spectacle of the artist, preferably on a big screen at Beiteddine, the day he's supposed to be performing. If the festival organisers won't go along with it, then we'll do it elsewhere."

Will an anti Zionist artist be allowed to perform in France?

Lets see how Dieudonne is being treated and boycotted in France, and taken to Courts by the Jewish French Lobbies?
In Lebanon, the Hezbollah, which represents the largest Muslim group, which does not dwell in the French Culture, dear to a part of the Lebanese elites, seems to me, to be entitled to boycott undesirable visitors!

LACKEY is the word that describes this writer

It never ceases to amaze me at how devoid most lebanese are of any REAL cultural pride. In america most of them would be called oreo cookies. americans and weterners in general view them as insignificant and ethnic while most lebanese themselves have been trying to be white and french all of their lives. It ain’t gonna happen.

Only when they are proud to be ARABS (as they are considered) will they attain any self esteem and hence command respect from the rest of the world. I am completely for establishing an identity and being proud of it. Little does this sarkis chick know that she is being used. Nobody in france gives a hoot about her except for the 15 seconds that they use her mouth to further defame and detract Hezbollah. After all, if she bothered to check, she would have realized that sarkozy’s grandfather was a hollow cause survivor and kouchner’s FATHER was jewish. The french are now completely and officially pro israel in every way. Doubt me, watch france 24 and check to see who’s jewish or not.

In a 100 years, nobody will remember her but Hezbollah might actually be running Lebanon. Oh and in case the reader is wondering? I AM LEBANESE!!!!!

Perspective, if you please.

Many people don't realize it, but this single phrase:
"She's part of the movement which is calling for resistance against Hezbollah."
reveals a lot of information.
99.9% of the Lebanese are heavily and hopelessly polarized politically, whether in the homeland or abroad. I dare believe I'm part of the 0.01% that keep a sensible distance.
Opposing what seems like a dubious anti-israeli propaganda move by Hezbollah (I don't know all the facts) is one thing. Immediately jumping the gap to a call of "resistance against Hezbollah" betrays Mrs Sarkis as belonging to the active militants of the current majority, which is fiercely set at demonizing Hezbollah exactly like Hezbollah seems set at demonizing Gad Elmaleh. The propaganda crossfire in Lebanon never takes a day's rest.
NOBODY IS BEING NEUTRALLY OBJECTIVE HERE. Not even the media, by far!!!
Be they right or wrong in the position they take, it's people like Mrs Sarkis, on both political sides of Lebanon, that make me seriously consider emigrating with no intention of return. Nobody really cares about the truth in this affair. Only about whether it can serve to attack Israel (for the opposition) or Hezbollah (for the majority).
Read the words of Reina Sarkis carefully : she never cares for Gad Elmaleh, only for her political cause and speech. The mote and the beam, "us versus them"... "Hezbollah have taken the Lebanese people hostage" is a rehashed slogan I hear every day here in Beirut. We're all victims, Reina, yes. But victim and tormentor are the same person!
It doesn't ultimately matter whether the story is true or fabricated. (Except for Gad and his fans.) The most significant point, is that Lebanon in its entirety is a guaranteed loser when people never criticize a position or statement, but always the person. Argumentum ad hominem, universalis.
Political eye patches, partisan blindness... by comparison, the annulation of a humour festival and the ensuing consequences on freedom of speech, seem trivial. The drowning man doesn't care that it's raining.

Lebanon doesn't need any more "resistance". Lebanon needs to loosen up.
At this very moment, all of Lebanon's factions are deep in talks for forming a consensual national unity government, the only way to manage with some fairness that highly diverse country. Futile efforts. When even the educated elites abroad, like Reina Sarkis, can't make ONE statement that steps outside the political fortifications erected within their own minds (a pity, for a psychoanalyst!), then clearly the whole country is hopeless, and we 0.01% struggle in vain. The sad truth is, Hezbollah don't slander or libel any worse than everybody else, and sense is everybody's first victim. Quit shooting the referee, already!

Just some perspective. "Knowledge is power".
Oh, BTW, this blog article is a blatant satire.

The whole idea is that this

The whole idea is that this person is being accused of being an ex-solider, although he official denied it! How can you people continue using evidence you found on an amateur blog that disappeared a few hours after publishing the (obviously) fake photo.

Where's your critical judgment? Wake up, people.

Amazing how you are twisting

Amazing how you are twisting the truth. Al Manar called for the boycott of Gad because of his Israeli army links, not because he is a Jew. Almanar has the right to voice its opinion. How come our three musketeer ministers who held a press conference only talked about the image of Lebanon and not if the accusation were right or wrong. Children of Qana will never forgive us if we allow Israeli army sympathizers to come into our country.

Not True

Just imagine a nazi ex-soldier wanted to perform in UK in 1943... Beleive me he will find a british person like Reine Serkis living in Italy that will defend his case.

Gad was supposed to go to

Gad was supposed to go to the Byblos festival in 2006. Sadly, the July War broke out between Hezbollah and Israel, so he had to cancel.

This summer, Gad was supposed to perform in the Baalbek festival, another popular event in Lebanon.

Now the Byblos festival is sponsored by the Byblos Bank and the Beiteddine festival is sponsored by the SGBL bank (Société Générale de Banque au Liban).

I am in no position to make accusations here, as I lack concrete proof. But I wonder if Byblos bank had any role in tipping off Hezbollah about this whole Gad el Maleh situation.

I hope someone can work on that angle and report back here.
